Korumburra Secondary College recently hosted the Engineers Without Borders Australia outreach program to inspire the next generation of engineers and technical professionals. The event was open to other schools with Leongatha Secondary College and Mirboo North Secondary College – Official also in attendance. The EWB team of volunteer students from Melbourne University ran creative, hands-on workshops designed to open young people’s minds to the challenges facing developing countries. They also had the opportunity to participate in small groups to learn about different career pathways.
One of the activities on the day challenged students to design a water filtration system for a country, within a budget. Each country also had a different degree of available information. At one extreme, Ethiopia had a budget of $20 where Australia’s budget was $600. There was some real innovation, creative thinking and problem-solving skills on display from the students. A fantastic initiative from EWB and Korumburra Secondary, it was great to have the opportunity for the LLEN support this event.
